It was during one of my training sessions that I could not help but notice a handicapped participant .
I know , I know we should not address them as handicapped . My bad !
Please allow me to use the words physically challenged or specially able .
This community is in need of infrastructure for their mobility , they need information on accessibility.
A disabled person in developed nations might have far better opportunities than for a normal person in India. It is lack of the opportunities to lead a life of dignity that disempowers them.
Mentally Disabled are even more vulnerable. They figure out at the bottom of hierarchy in the disability category. They are not even entitled to the reservations in govt. services that physically disabled enjoy.
But apart from this glorified terminology what else do we do . The common most expressions are:
1. I never thought about it and I am Sorry .
2. I don’t know how to help but I will figure out soon
3. I wish to start
Many times what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks but a lovely heart that listens & cares too. Being a carer can be hard work but has its compensations – a word, a smile, a touch, companionship and delight in those we serve.
Since you’re here…I have a small favor to ask. Show empathy! but don’t stop there. Action helps too .
For the human spirit is one of ability, perseverance and courage that no one can steal away.We must empower every individual with a disability to live with dignity.
Remember…Disability is not only a Human Rights issue, it is a Developmental issue as well.
